Instruments were expensive, rare, and tied to ritual, performance, or elite life. 🎼
Sound was meaningful, not ambient.

💡 It signaled intelligence, education, moral formation, and social order.
Volume never equaled value. ❌🔊

🤔 What feels loud lately that shouldn’t be?

Plato didn’t fear music.
⚡ He feared reaction.

For Plato, “noise” wasn’t about decibels.
It was philosophical. Cultural. 📜

Noise was sound divorced from form; disruptive to harmony, discipline, and judgment. ⚖️

🏛️ Athens in Plato’s era had:

By ~1300 AD and unambiguously by ~1400 AD not everyone was a master anymore.
Not every sound served formation. ❌🎵

Urbanization dissolved ceremonial order. 🏗️
Professional monopoly collapsed. 👥
Writers began noticing something subtle but dangerous: ⚠️

sound no longer trained the soul: it stimulated it. 💥

Plato wasn’t anti-music.
